Day 1: (Flexible): Arrive Christchurch : Around Christchurch

Day 1 Arrive in Christchurch and pick up your vehicle before beginning your holiday. If you collect your vehicle early in the morning, head straight out to Akaroa on the Banks peninsula. A lovely day trip to an early French colony and old whaling town. You will have plenty of time to stop for lunch at one of the many harbourside cafes, have a look around and get back to Christchurch before the supermarkets close to stock up for day 2. If you collect the vehicle later head 5 kms towards town to New World supermarket to pick up supplies and then settle in to the Meadow Park Holiday Park for the evening. Check out “SOL - South of Lichfield” a labyrinth of funky bars, clubs and restaurants in the back alleys and old warehouse district of Christchurch town where you will be spoilt for choice on where to dine.

Day 2: (Flexible): Christchurch to Kaikoura 184 kms

Day 2 The trip north takes you past the wide open and foaming surf beaches of Woodend, Waikuku, Waipara is known for its vineyards and olive groves – an excellent place to pause for refreshment. This coastal route is an impressively changing panorama of scenery. Keep an eye out for dolphin pods along the coast. Kaikoura has changed and expanded rapidly, from a sleepy seaside village to a bustling community of cafes and tourism. You can visit the seal colony or take to the air for a scenic flight. A whale watching tour could bring you up close and personal to many whale species such as the Southern Right, Minke or the awesome Humpback. End the day in one of the many cafes and indulge in a seafood buffet of local fresh crayfish.

Day 3: (Flexible): Kaikoura to Hanmer Springs 132 kms

Day 3 Today you will take the scenic Inland Road to Hanmer Springs. There will be many photo opportunities along the way. Hanmer Springs is a destination for relaxation and indulgence. You can soak in the hot springs or treat yourself to a range of spa therapies. Outdoor activities are also a Hanmer specialty. Forest walks, horse trekking, trout fishing, jet boating, bungy jumping and golf are some of the options. Not for the faint hearted is a 30 minute adventure ride in a Swiss military designed Hagglund.

Day 4: (Flexible): Hanmer Springs to Murchison 163 kms

Day 4 Departing Hanmer early today, the beautiful Lewis Pass takes you through beech forest to Maruia Springs, where you can enjoy a hot soak. At Springs Junction you’ll turn onto State Highway 65 – a beautiful section of road that leads you through the enchanting Maruia Forest, which has New Zealand’s largest natural population of Kakariki (a native parakeet). At Murchison you can find out about the massive earthquake that shook the region in 1929.

Day 5: (Flexible): Murchison to Nelson 132 kms

Day 5 If you have time, take a detour to the Nelson lakes district starting from St Arnauds. St Arnaud is at the heart of the Tasman District's winter playground and is the gateway to the Nelson Lakes National Park, you are guaranteed to use a lot of film in this region. Nelson Lakes National Park is found at the northern end of the Southern Alps and about 80km southwest of Nelson. There are plenty of bushwalking tracks that can take an hour to a day! Either stay at St Arnaud for the night, or continue on to Nelson.

Day 6: (Flexible): Around Nelson

Day 6 Nelson is home to a fascinating community of beach, bush and art lovers. From pristine beaches to beautiful restaurants and wineries, there is something for everyone here. Nelson receives New Zealands most sunlight hours which makes it a favourite summer holiday destination both domestically and Internationally.

Day 7: (Flexible): Nelson to Marahau 69 kms

Day 7 The road to Motueka hugs the coast, which makes it easy to browse beaches as you go. The Waimea Inlet and the villages of Mapua and Ruby Bay are particularly irresistible. In the horticultural town of Motueka you can indulge your love of fresh fruit and vegetables, and feed your imagination with local arts and crafts. The short trip to Marahau takes you past the road to Kaiteriteri Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. At Marahau, you can hire kayaks, swim with seals or catch a water taxi to one of the park’s amazing beaches.

Day 8: (Flexible): Marahau to West Port 267 kms

Day 8 On the way to Westport you’ll travel up the Motueka River Valley on a pretty, winding road that takes you past magical scenery and tiny settlements. At Hawks Crag the road has been hacked out of solid rock – you’ll drive under a dramatic overhang. Westport is known as a coal mining town and a base for outdoor adventures. Strap on your walking shoes to investigate the seal colony. Black water rafting, jet boating, horse trekking and surf rafting are other opportunities for outdoor excitement.

Day 9: (Flexible): West Port to Greymouth 102 kms

Day 9 The road to Punakaiki hugs the coast, providing spectacular views of wild beaches and the tempestuous Tasman Sea. Punakaiki is famous for its pancake rocks and booming blowholes. When the tide is right, the blow holes are spectacular. There are many excellent coastal and inland walks in this area. The road to Greymouth is breathtaking. White capped breakers and rugged rocks on one side, bush-clad mountains on the other side. Greymouth has a long gold mining history. It’s the largest town on the west coast and is known for its awesome seascapes. The local brewery runs tours or you can catch up with west coast history at the museum. White water rafting, sea kayaking and gold panning are other things to do.

Day 10: (Flexible): Greymouth to Franz Josef & Fox Glacier 173 kms

Day 10 Departing Greymouth early today and beginning your journey South takes you through the “Frontier” town of Hokitika. First settled in 1860, it’s a great place to have a cuppa and check out the local treasure, Greenstone – you can see it being sculpted and polished. Take some time to enjoy the wild beaches of the West Coast and breathe in the salt spray. Just past Hokitika are the Punakaiki Pancake rocks and blowholes, stand back and watch the show! Arriving at beautiful Franz Josef Glacier, marvel at this ancient river of solid white ice. Five minutes drive South is the Fox Glacier, this is where you will spend your evening.

Day 11: (Flexible): Franz Josef & Fox Glacier to Wanaka 261 kms

Day 11 Leaving the glaciers you will wind your way though yet more spectacular scenery and across the long one way bridge over the Haast River to the settlement of Haast. A rugged township, often a starting point for helicopter deer hunting trips. Enjoy waterfalls and river scenery as you leave the coast and climb up the Haast river valley to Haast Pass. The road snakes through the Aspiring National Park, and the vegetation becomes more sparse as you travel inland. Lakes Wanaka and Hawea lie side by side. Ringed by pebbly beaches and with magnificent views to the surrounding peaks, both lakes offer a variety of adventures. The township of Wanaka offers many cafes, restaurants and interesting shops.

Day 12: (Flexible): Around Wanaka

Day 12 A free day to explore this beautiful lakeside region. Take to the air on one of the many flightseeing opportunities, a fishing charter or in to the surrounding area on one of the many walks. The Clutha river walk from the Southern end of Wanaka to Albert town is popular. The Mount Iron walk is a little more strenuous, but well worth it for the views of the lake. If you don’t want to use your own legs, horse trekking is available.

Day 13: (Flexible): Wanaka to Queenstown 113 kms

Day 13 An easy day today. You have 2 routes to Queenstown, the Crown Range Road is the more spectacular shorter option, but a little more challenging. The other option will take you alongside the Clutha and Shotover Rivers. The alpine resort of Queenstown is exciting, sophisticated and fantastically scenic., You will have more time on your return to explore Queenstown, so get the feel of it and relax!

Day 14: (Flexible): Queenstown to Te Anau 174 kms

Day 14 Travel from Queenstown to Lake Te Anau. Your journey clings scenically to the edge of Lake Wakatipu. Start your day early so you have time to take a break in Kingston, the home of a remarkable vintage steam train and visit the small towns of Mossburn and Lumsden for unique shopping opportunities – a farm tour is another possibility. The picturesque Te Anau Township sits on the shores of Lake Te Anau. Cruise on the lakes, walk the tracks and visit the Department of Conservation wildlife centre. The Te Ana-au Caves are an excellent adventure.

Day 15: (Flexible): Te Anau to Milford Sound 121 kms

Day 15 The road to Milford is one of New Zealand’s most scenic drives. The first part is relatively mild farmland, then you’ll ease into beech forest near the entrance to the Fiordland National Park. Look for the Avenue of the Disappearing Mountain and the Mirror Lakes. The rough hewn Homer Tunnel brings you into Milford Sound, an amazing 22km-long fiord dominated by Mitre Peak. A cruise on Milford Sound will be an essential component of your time in Fiordland, or you can get up close and personal in a sea kayak. Tall waterfalls, vertical rock faces and seals are just some of the things you’ll remember. The underwater observatory is an option with most cruises.

Day 16: (Flexible): Milford Sound to Te Anau 121 kms

Day 16 The grandeur of Milford Sound can be appreciated from the air or water. Bowen Falls, hurtling 165 metres into the sea, and the Stirling Falls further down the sound, set amidst the towering cliffs and dwarfed by Mitre Peak, are truly spectacular after rain. Take an early morning cruise to avoid the day-trippers from Queenstown. Or if you are feeling a little more adventurous, you can explore the Sound by kayak. Prepare to get cold and wet, but you will feel the true majesty of the surrounds by getting seriously up close and personal. Take the opportunity to get those last minute photos on the way back to Te Anau.

Day 17: (Flexible): Te Anau to Dunedin 290 kms

Day 17 Todays journey will see you travelling to Lumsden and across the river plain to Gore. While in Gore, visit the Hokonui Moonshine Museum to learn about the area’s history of illicit whisky distilling. West of Gore is Mandeville, where you can go flying in a restored Tiger Moth. Next is Balclutha with its distinctive arched concrete bridge and an interesting museum. Look for the historic Old Sod Cottage as you drive through the rural town of Milton. Next stop, the historic town of Dunedin. Famous for its “no expense spared” architecture and magnificent harbour views. A visit to Larnach castle and the stunning surrounding gardens is a must. Take a stroll down the esplanade at St Clair beach and dine out at one of the many promenade restaurants.

Day 18: (Flexible): Around Dunedin

Day 18 A free day to explore Dunedins rich architecture and ornate mansions. Around the city you can visit historic homes, dip into the chocolate factory or browse the excellent museums. Take a drive along Otago Peninsula to discover one of many wildlife encounters – there are penguin, albatross and seal colonies here. The Tunnel Beach walkway is only a few kms South of Dunedin. The tunnel was carved out by hand to allow access to a secluded beach beyond the promontory. Best to visit at low tide and closed from 20th August to 20th October.

Day 19: (Flexible):Dunedin to Oamaru 119 kms

Day 19 The journey from Dunedin to Oamaru is steeped in history. The museum at Palmerston is dedicated to the regions Scottish heritage. Take a breather at the mysterious spherical Boulders at Moeraki. Oamaru offers you many historical places of interest. You can visit the museum, the Blue Penguin colony and the beautiful public gardens.

Day 20: (Flexible):Oamaru to Christchurch 246 kms

Day 20 Your final day takes you through the picture perfect town of Timaru. Enjoy the park at Caroline Bay which includes a maze and aviary. Next is Temuka, famous for its high quality pottery. The loop road to Geraldine allows a trip to the gourmet cheese factory and vintage car museum. Ashburton is home to six museums and is a trout fishing mecca. River crossings will be a highlight of today with the 1.8km bridge across the “braided” Rakaia river system. Arrive back in Christchurch late afternoon to drop off the vehicle before 5pm.
